Food for the Inner man

Lesson 1

Scripture Gen. 28: 10-22 (I suggest you read this first to give the Lord a chance to speak to you in a personal way.)

Time to think:     Why would God allow Jacob to dream such a dream?

What does the ladder mean to you?

How can this be applied in your everyday walk with God?

My thoughts: Jacobs’s life epitomizes the life of many of us, some more then others. Jacob had a way of manipulating his brother so that he would get his way. He was deceiving (hence the meaning of his name). He was selfish, jealous and probably had other bad traits. Can you think of any examples in your life where these traits come out and haunt you? I know I can. I don’t think I ever gone to extremes as Jacob did but I’ve been there and done that. I’ve been jealous of others when they succeed in things that I think I could succeed in if I worked hard on it. I’ve lied to protect myself from being corrected or punished in my younger years. So you see where I’m getting at. We can learn a lot about ourselves by reading and closely observing the life that God chose for Jacob. Nothing is to hard for God and I believe this is shown in Jacobs’s reaction to his dream (Verse 16). This was the turning point in his life. His heart was changed from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh (Ezek 11: 19). His eyes were open to Gods compassion. His will was altered to pleasing God, not pleasing himself. I think this was the end of the old man and the beginning of the new man. The dream was a good indication of Gods concern not only of things in heaven but the things of earth. God is not fixed on the throne throwing out commands. When Jacob calls or when we call, He’s there by our side. We see that when God descends to earth in the form of man (JESUS). In conclusion, let us look at Jacobs’s ladder and see that there is a way up for us and way down for our heavenly father. Jesus came down to be like us and to give us an opportunity to be like Him. So let Jesus enter your heart and be like Jacob and have a heart for God and not a heart of stone.
