LESSON 9

11/25/02

PRAISES WELL DESERVED

SCRIPTURE: Ps. 136, Ps.135: 1-3, Heb.13: 15, Ps.9: 11, Ps.33: 2, Hab.3: 3

YOUR THOUGHTS: Why do you think God deserves all of our praises?

What does that mean “the earth was full of His praise”?

Why is God worthy of your praises even when you are suffering?

MY THOUGHTS: What does Thanksgiving mean to you?   Does it mean eat, drink and be merry, or to eat so much that you want to explode or to eat Grandmas homemade pie until you burst?   Does this holiday give you a chance to travel to your friends or relatives for a turkey dinner and a couple of football games?   Is this a great opportunity for you to enjoy the various parades on TV?  I’m certainly not knocking all of that good stuff, but we have a tendency of forgetting that the reason that we can enjoy the good food and wholesome fellowship is because of our God.   In this lesson I would like to share with you a few events in the Bible that would convince you, or at least it convinced me as to why our God deserves all the praises and thanksgiving from His people.

The first event is when God set the Israelites free from the gripes of the Egyptians.  During that whole adventure, Gods tender loving care toward His people was evident. What impresses me the most was when God heard the murmuring and complaining of His people   He provided quail and manna to satisfy their hunger Ex.16: 12-15. This was only one of many times that God intervened in meeting the needs of the Israelites. To me that would qualify God as praise well deserved.

Another event that I would like to bring to your attention is in the book of Jonah. You see Gods patience in the way He handles Jonah’s stubbornness. Then you see God’s mercy when He uses Jonah to warn the people of Ninaveh to repent for their wickedness Jon.1: 2. Then you see a loving father preparing different manifestations, such as the gourd or the worm to make it clear to Jonah that he is wrong in actions toward Gods plan. Jon.4. What you see in these passages is Gods concern not only for the welfare of a multitude of people but the welfare of an individual person such as Jonah or you and me.. To me again, that would qualify God as praise well deserved.

The greatest event of all is when the Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us John.1: 14.  That’s remarkable that God would manifest from a spiritual, immortal being to a carnal, mortal being. That He would go from not experiencing any pain to experiencing pain and go from a place where there are no tears or sadness to a place where there is a lot of sadness, all because of His love for us. That to me is the greatest reason why God deserves all our praises.

So in conclusion I would like to challenge you and I to step away from the dinner table and the football game, pick up the Bible and read about all the great things our Lord has done and let our mouths be filled with thanksgiving to God whose praise is well deserved.
