Tribute to Rev. Sarah E.Clayton
Sarah Clayton is one of the ladies of honor who graced the ministry of the Church of God in PA. She pioneered a church in Mercersburg and stayed as pastor for 37 years.
She finished 7th grade in school and dropped out of school to do work to help support her family that had moved to a farm in Shade Valley. She walked to a Methodist Church every Sunday. She would go to the altar every Sunday but no one ever told her how to be saved.
At the age of 18 she attended a Pentecostal revival and got saved and baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.
She entered the ministry when few denominations permitted ladies to pastor and preach. She felt the call of God upon her life and she believed that God would make a way for her to exercise the gift of ministry. God did that in the Church of God.
A compliment to her ministry was the way the people of Mercersburg viewed the Church of God. If you asked directions to the Church of God, they'd reply, "You mean Sister Clayton's Church?"
She had joined her mother, husband, 2 brothers and 2 sisters in Heaven. Only Uncle George is left. He is a 60 year member of the Cross Keys Church of God, ready to join his sisters and brothers in Heaven.
It pays to serve God. Death becomes a blessing and not a curse. It is eternally worthwhile.
