LESSON 28
PSALM 1
5/25/05
YOU’RE THOUGHTS: What kind of choices do you think are important in your life?
Have you ever consider where you might be when you leave this earth?
What can you do here on earth that will help you when you have to leave this earth?
THEME SCRIPTURE: Psalm 1
MY THOUGHTS: I just went through the process of making a career change and the toughest part, as most of you are aware of is weighing the options and seeking God on showing me where His Will lies after those options were considered. In this lesson, I would like to start our journey in the first book of Psalms.
Making choices or deciding which way or path we should take is the biggest part of our lives. Should we go into this direction, or should we not? Should we hang around this group of people or should we not? Should we support this organization or should we oppose it? These are the question, and many more that we are subject to time after time.
In the first book of Psalms we are given two ways or paths and we must consider which path we are going to take. It’s very simple, do we want to spend our lives on earth and for eternity in the way of the righteous or spend it all in the way of the ungodly. Verse 1 of Psalm 1 tells us that we will be blessed, which means to enjoy God’s special favor and grace, if we do not involve ourselves in the ways of the ungodly or wicked.. Verse 1 starts on a slow, downward slide into a commitment that would lead to our destruction if those choices that are mentioned in this verse are not avoided. First you walk or associate with the wicked or ungodly, then you decide to stand or commit yourself to being with sinners and that leads to sitting or a hardening of your heart with the scornful. Then it might be too late to change.
The second verse tells you what you should do. It starts out by suggesting that the righteous must delight or ponder upon the laws of God which is God’s individual commands and also God’s word, which are the scriptures. Then it show’s us that this isn’t just a once in a while practice that we are to embark in, but it is a day and night issue. We need to meditate on Gods word from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep. That sounds like an impossible task to achieve but if your sincere in allowing Jesus to reign in your heart that command can and will be possible. This we will see in verse three.
The resources that God promised the righteous is without limits. Imagine a tree near a river of water that constantly provides the nourishment that the tree roots are searching for. This nourishment gives the tree the strength to carry on and produce those beautiful leaves and in some trees, flowers. That is what I mean when I say that it is possible to meditate day and night on God’s word. God’s word is the living water we need to sustain us when things seem impossible. I think it’s important to understand that the tree that is next to the endless water supply had to direct its roots toward that supply and in doing so it took time and cooperation. That’s the same in our case but seeing such great potential makes this choice all worth it.
The opposite is presented in verses 4 and 5. If we choose the way of the ungodly we would be like chaff which the wind drives away. There is no stability going the way of the ungodly. There’s no hope to encourage you to go on. There is the emptiness that only can be filled by the living water that Jesus offered to the woman at the well. (John 4: 10).
The last verse in this first book of Psalms seems to tie in all the other verses into this one statement,” the Lord knows the way”. What way do you want to have a relationship with God? The way of the righteous, which is fulfilled in Jesus or the way of the ungodly which can lead to destruction. Only by the grace of our loving God do we have the power to choose. So let’s be smart and make the right choice. God Bless all. Amen
