SECURITY BLANKET
SCRIPTURES: Deut.18:9-22, Deut.9:12-16, Ps.106:19-23, John.3:14-16
YOUR THOUGHTS: What personality traits do you see in God when He’s talking with Moses?
What did Jesus say identifies Him as a prophet?
Do you have a security blanket of some sort in your
How does it affect your relationship with God?
MY THOUGHTS: Isn’t it true that we all have the tendency to cling to some form of a security blanket or to search for answers to a safe future? An extremely independent person might not be in full agreement with me, in fact if asked, his answer would be “ I don’t need anybody, I’m doing just fine on my own”.. Some people do have easier lives then others. They seem to have everything they want that will give them a comfortable life style such as money, a beautiful home, good health and so on. Even though their lives are easy, they still search for something or somebody that will satisfy their security blanket syndrome. I think that when sin was first initiated in the garden, that’s when an empty void was inserted into our souls and we have a uncontrollable desire to fill it. What do we fill it with? That’s what we’re going to talk about in this week’s lesson.
Around 1500 years before Jesus was born, the Israelites, Gods chosen people were doing just what was mentioned in the beginning of this lesson. They were searching for that person or thing to fill that emptiness in their souls just like we’re doing today. They made objects into idols, like we do with money, or jewelry, or TVs, or computers, or a sports figure and so on. They got into witchcraft or a medium or an omen interpreter just like some people do today. They would try something and if that didn’t work they got into something else in order to fulfill that natural desire for a secured life. That sounds like us, don’t you think?
Our God, who is all knowing, was very much aware of that some 1500 years BC. His remedy to that problem then was to choose a man by the name of Moses. He became Gods mediator between God and His people. Moses was to warn the Israelites that they must stop looking to other sources for guidance and start looking to him, who was Gods spokesman. One of Gods way of communicating to the people of that time was through a prophet and that’s what Moses was. Moses made it clear to the Israelites that a prophet must be tested to determine if that person was a true prophet. Then Moses made a prediction that would ultimately affect our lives today. He predicted that God would raise up a prophet like him and will put His words in His mouth and command Him to speak to us.Deut.18:18 Jesus is that prophet. When Jesus was born He fulfilled what Moses predicted and He became the one that we must follow or look to for guidance. Remember that empty void we must fill? I know without a doubt that Jesus is one that can fill that void and also guarantee a safe and secure future. Remember that story. in Luke.19: 1-10 when a man name Zacchaeus was so determined to see who this Jesus was that he climbed up into a sycamore tree to see over the crowd because he was so short. His yearning to see Jesus and also to bring Him to his home is showing me that he had a empty void in his soul and when he excepted Jesus into his life that void was filled. Are you searching for a secure hold on something or someone in your life? Try Jesus. Bring Him home with you. Let Him be your security blanket. Get to know Him through His word and I will assure you that He will fill your empty void.
